Police to safeguard 188 churches in Surakarta

As many as 1,120 personnel of the Surakarta Police will be deployed to secure the Christmas and the new year’s eve celebrations in various spots across the Central Java's city, including Surakarta's 188 churches.

he Surakarta Police will deploy 1,120 officers to safeguard various areas in the city over Christmas and New Year’s, including 188 churches.

"The city police alone have prepared 1,120 personnel. There will be additional security measures by a joint team comprising personnel from the National Police, the Indonesian Military [TNI] and the Public Order Agency [Satpol PP]," said Surakarta Police operations head Comr. Arief Joko on Tuesday.

The deployment, Arief said, will be focused on 188 churches in 51 districts in the Central Java capital, in an operation aimed at providing 24-hour security starting Dec. 22 until Jan. 1.

The police have categorized the churches in three priority levels based on location and congregation size, with 16 churches given the highest priority.

Bomb squads will take part in the operation, which will also cover a number of tourist sites.

"To date, we have detected no terrorism threat," Arief said. "People should, however, inform the police should they find any suspicious activities."

The Surakarta Transportation Agency will deploy 100 personnel to anticipate traffic congestion in 10 busy spots in the city, said agency head Hari Prihanto.

The agency will also monitor 67 CCTV cameras across the city. (vla/ipa)
