riathlete Jauhari Johan is targeting to win at least the bronze model at the 2018 Asian Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra, from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.
Jauhari, who hails from South Sumatra and previously focused on long-distance running, said reaching that target would be challenging enough, as he would be competing against top athletes from China, South Korea and Japan.
Athletes from the aforementioned countries have dominated triathlon competitions in the region ever since the sport was first included in the Games in Doha in 2006.
“It won’t be easy, because I will be racing against athletes from countries that have participated at the Olympic level,” Jauhari said Wednesday, as quoted by news agency Antara. “It is reasonable, I think, for me to [proclaim a target of winning] bronze. Personally, I’m eyeing gold.”
At the multisport event in August, Jauhari will compete in the mixed team relay category.
With less than seven months left to prepare, he hoped to give his best for the country, said Jauhari, who won silver medals in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games men’s track-and-field competitions over 5,000 meters and 10,000 m in 2011.
Jauhari said he would train by himself in his hometown of Palembang, while waiting for the national training camp to begin in Bandung on Jan. 20.
