Island focus: Supreme Court to improve services

T

he Supreme Court (MA) plans to improve the services and accountability of all courts by implementing a one-stop integrated service for court information.

“All information regarding legal proceedings should be accessed only at the courts’ information centers,” Supreme Court spokesman Abdullah told reporters on Friday.

He added that all court staffers, excluding those at the front office, would not be allowed to meet with potential petitioners or clients outside of working hours to prevent bribery and obstructions of justice.

The policy was developed in response to various reports of illegal fee practices at courts across the country, he said.

“We expect this policy will reduce violations such as illegal fees,” Abdullah said.

In its bid to push for a more efficient judiciary, the Supreme Court will also streamline legal proceedings by providing templates for cassation cases. The move was mandated in a 2017 Supreme Court Regulation.

Abdullah also announced that in February, the Supreme Court would start the training of 1,577 potential judges who have recently passed their recruitment test.

The two-year training is mandatory for potential judges who wish to serve in courts across the country, which has long suffered from a shortage of judges.

Abdullah added that the Supreme Court would enlist the Judicial Commission and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to train the integrity of the new judges.
