Rumah Faye & its founder

Faye Hasian Simandjuntak

Faye Hasian Simandjuntak was born in 2002. She has a strong military lineage: her mother Pauline Pandjaitan is the daughter of Ret. General Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, who is currently Indonesia’s coordinating minister for maritime affairs.

Faye’s father is Brigadier General Maruli Simandjuntak, who has recently been appointed as the deputy commander of the Presidential security unit.

She grew up as a “military brat” and has attended ten schools throughout Java, as the family had to frequently move to follow her father’s postings. She currently lives in Jakarta and attends 11th grade at the Jakarta International School.

Throughout her childhood, Faye’s parents have always taken her along to orphanages and underlined the importance of service to others. She was only nine years old when she became aware of the existence of child trafficking in Indonesia, and was determined to do something for these youths. Two years later, she set up Rumah Faye with her mother.

Rumah Faye works with other NGOs and law enforcement agencies to save youngsters from prostitution and trafficking. It provides a safe haven as well as skills that allow them to become independent, and links them to job opportunities.

It currently provides a home for 20 girls aged between 12 and 18 in Batam, the Riau Islands.

“So far, we only accept girls. However, in the future we hope that we can also accommodate boys,” Faye says.
