tate-owned construction company PT Wijaya Karya (Wika), the main contractor for the light rapid transit (LRT) project stretching from Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta to the Velodrome sports complex in East Jakarta, has assured that the construction deadline is still on track despite an incident on Monday.

Box girders at the LRT construction site in Kayu Putih, East Jakarta, collapsed at 12:20 a.m. on Monday, injuring at least five workers. Three months ago, a crane at a nearby LRT construction site in Kelapa Gading also collapsed, damaging part of a house.

“The cause of the incident is being investigated by related parties, however, initial findings show that it will not affect the construction deadline nor deteriorate the existing structures,” Wika secretary Puspita Anggraeni said in a written statement on Monday.

She added that the management had taken steps to handle the collapsed girder, to ensure that the LRT service could begin operating before the start of the 2018 Asian Games in August as targeted.

“Wika offered an apology to the public for the inconvenience caused. We are committed to prioritizing health and safety in developing the LRT project in Jakarta,” she said. (fac)
