tate-owned trainmaker PT Industry Kereta Api (INKA) has signed a purchase contract for diesel-powered trains with Philippine National Railways (PNR) with a total contract value of Rp 127.3 billion (US$9.56 million).

The agreement document was signed in Manila on Monday by PNR general manager Junn B Magno and PT INKA president director Budi Noviantoro.

“We pledge to manufacture high-quality products to provide the best service to PNR,” said Budi as reported by kompas.com. He expressed appreciation to PNR, which had given INKA the opportunity to take part in developing transportation facilities in the country.

Meanwhile, Magno said the train procurement project was initiated by the Philippine government in trying to provide commuters with reliable, convenient and faster public transportation for the people of the country.

“The diesel-powered train will be operated along the track between Tutuban Station and Alabang Station in Metro Manila,” he added.

At the signing ceremony was Philippine Transportation Department secretary Arthur P Tugade, Indonesia’s trade attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Manila Irawan and PNR chairman Roberto Tupas Lastimoso, among others.

Previously, INKA also announced a deal worth Rp 1.3 trillion (US$90 million) to supply locomotives to Zambia, marking its first foray into the largely untapped African market.

It is also looking at the possibility of exporting to other African countries, including Nigeria, Sudan, Mozambique and Egypt, as well as in Asian markets like Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Australia, among others. (bbn)
