29-year-old woman suffered severe burns to her face and other parts of her body after her husband allegedly threw strong acid at her, the Jakarta Police reported on Friday.
Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said in a statement that the victim was now receiving medical treatment at Mitra Keluarga Kalideres Hospital in West Jakarta.
Argo further explained that the perpetrator, also 29-years-old, allegedly committed the act because he could not accept that the victim had filed for divorce.
On Jan. 14, the husband reportedly visited his wife’s rented house to talk about the divorce petition.
The discussion is said to have turned into a fight, which led to the man attacking the victim with hot water mixed with strong acid.
“The suspect planned to injure the victim’s face,” Argo said in the statement, as quoted by kompas.com.
The man was arrested in Kebumen, Central Java, on Thursday.
The perpetrator could be charged under the Criminal Code (KUHP) articles concerning assault, as well as the articles on cruel treatment, which carry a prison sentence of five years or more. (vny)
