Street vendors were seen operating on sidewalks along one of the city’s main roads, Jl. Sudirman, near Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday evening.
Offering their merchandise to pedestrians passing through, the vendors occupied the sidewalks from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.
One of the vendors, Alex, said they had been occupying the sidewalks for around two months after being evicted from a plot of land on Jl. Bendungan Hilir.
The plot of land is owned by city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya, which intended to build a modern market in the area. The street vendors that used to occupy the area were evicted, so they decided to run their business on the sidewalks on Jl. Sudirman.
“We have no other place to go,” Alex said, as quoted by kompas.com.
Previously, Jakarta administration accommodated street vendors in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, by closing one lane of Jl. Jati Baru Raya in front of Tanah Abang Station.
