he body of an inmate of the Salemba detention center in Central Jakarta, identified as Riski Permana, 27, was found hanging in a bathroom at the facility on Monday.
The center’s warden, Masjuno, said the prisoner appeared to have taken his own life, according to a witness named Simon, who shared the cell with Riski.
Surprised that Riski had not returned from the bathroom after a long time, Simon reportedly called for him and knocked on the bathroom door. As there was no answer, Simon forced open the door and found Riski hanging by a sarong tied to a metal pipe, the warden said.
“It happened near Isha prayer time [around 7:30 p.m.]. The bathroom is inside the cell, and the cellmate wondered why the door remained closed for quite a while. Hence, he broke it open,” Masjuno said on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Detention center officials are still investigating the reason for the apparent suicide. Masjuno said Riski might have had personal problems, as his family rarely visited him.
