n Argentinian man accused of kidnapping his own daughter and bringing her to Indonesia has attempted suicide to avoid being deported.
Jorge Gabriel Langone, 42, reportedly attempted suicide on Tuesday morning by cutting his wrist using a piece of a broken glass bottle. He was taken to Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital in Makassar, South Sulawesi, and was still undergoing treatment there on Wednesday.
He had been in the custody of the Makassar immigration office after he was found with his 7-year-old daughter Alum Avalos in North Toraja, South Sulawesi, last week.
Langone had acted as he did because he did not want to be deported, said Andi Pallawarukka, head of the Makassar immigration office. “The Argentinian Embassy had already scheduled to deport Jorge [Langone] and his girlfriend on Thursday, but he didn’t want to go,” Andi told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday. “That’s why he attempted suicide.”
Alum was allegedly kidnapped by her father and his girlfriend in June 2017 from Buenos Aires. The girl was reunited with her mother on Wednesday.
Langone and Candela Gutierrez, the alleged kidnappers, were detained by immigration officials because they entered the country without proper documents. Upon their return home, they are likely to undergo due legal process for the alleged kidnapping.
“Both of them will be escorted to Jakarta on Thursday morning and flown to Argentina. The embassy has taken care of their tickets,” Andi said.
