Economy in brief: Internet use highest in middle lower class

span>The number of internet users in the country stood at 143.26 million in 2017, increasing around 8 percent compared to the previous year, according to a survey by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association.

Meanwhile, the survey found that most internet users in the country, or almost 75 percent, were from the lower middle class.

“Around 74.62 percent of internet users in Indonesia were from the level economy C,” the association’s secretary-general, Henri Kasyfi Soemartono, said, referring to the lower middle economic group.

The top economic group accounts for 1.98 percent of internet users, the upper middle group 16.02 percent and the lowest economic group 7.39 percent.

The finding was the result of a survey involving 2,500 respondents from across the country. In addition, the survey also found that more than half of internet users in the country own smartphones or tablets while only 25.72 percent own a computer or laptop.

Meanwhile, most internet users in the country or 49.52 percent are in the 19-34 age group. Trailing behind were internet users aged between 35 and 54 with 29.55 percent. Internet users in the 13 to 18 age group made up 16.68 percent.

Based on the region, more than half of internet users, or 58.08 percent, live on Java Island. Around 19 percent live in Sumatra, 7.97 percent in Kalimantan, 5.63 percent in Bali and Nusa Tenggara, 6.73 percent in Sulawesi and 2.49 percent in Maluku and Papua.
