Thousands of teachers in Depok, West Java, have not received their salaries for the past two months.
Depok Education Agency head Muhammad Thamrin said on Wednesday that the agency was working to ensure that the salaries for 1,759 contract-based teachers, most of whom were elementary school teachers, would be handed out this month.
“The wages are sourced from school operational assistance from both the local administration budget and the state budget. The central government has yet to disburse the aid,” said Thamrin as quoted by tempo.co.
Depok Mayor Mohammad Idris said the delay was not intentional and that it occurred because of a long salary disbursement process.
“The process takes time as there are many requirements that need to be fulfilled,” said Idris, who also expressed hope that the funds could be disbursed this month.
According to Idris, each contract teacher was paid Rp 400,000 (US$ 29.4) per month, up from the previous figure of Rp 200,000. (jlm/wit)
