Island focus: Floods affect thousands, disrupt services

T

housands of houses in seven districts in Bandung regency, West Java, have been inundated by up to two meters of floodwater from the Citarum River following high intensity rainfall in the past few days. At least 9,000 houses and 29,000 people were affected by the floods, the head of the Bandung Disaster Mitigation Agency, Heru Kiatno, said on Friday.

The seven districts flooded are Dayeuhkolot, Baleendah, Bojongsoang, Rancaekek, Majalaya, Ibun and Paseh. The agency has set up shelters for residents of Baleendah and Dayeuhkolot, while shelters for the other districts are still being set up.

Meanwhile, in Brebes, Central Java, train services were disrupted when floodwater inundated 1 kilometer of railway between Ketanggungan Station in Brebes and Cirebon, West Java, on Friday. The Jakarta-Yogyakarta train service, which passes through Cirebon and Purwokerto, was also disrupted.

Floods hit when the Cisanggarung River in Cirebon overflowed because of high intensity rainfall that began on Friday morning.

A spokesman for state-owned railway company PT KAI’s operational region V in Purwokerto, Ixfan Hendriwintoko, said the Jakarta-Yogyakarta service was rerouted through the Tegal-Prupuk railway.

“As of this afternoon, there is no indication that the water will subside as the downpour is still taking place in the area,” he said on Friday, adding that it would take at least 24 hours for services to return to normal once the floods subside.
