akarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno has announced he will allow street vendors to operate on sidewalks in Melawai business district in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, despite a prevailing regulation that prohibits them from doing so.
Sandiaga said it was necessary so that 75 street vendors registered in the area could operate.
However, he said the administration would manage the street vendors so their businesses would not disturb pedestrians. “We will find a way to provide a little space for pedestrians [on the sidewalks].
“In principle we want to provide suitable sidewalks for pedestrians. We don’t want the function of the sidewalks to be disturbed [by the street vendors],” Sandiaga said on Wednesday.
He added that the administration would encourage the street vendors to participate in the One District One Center (OK OCE) entrepreneurship program.
Previously, it was reported that dozens of street vendors on Jl. Sunan Ampel and Jl. Adityawarman I had put up OK OCE banners on their tents.
However, the city administration removed the banners on Tuesday afternoon because none of the vendors were OK OCE members. (cal)
