team comprising three members of the National Commission of Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and four other renowned figures has been set up to monitor the investigation into the attack against Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan, which has remained unsolved for almost a year.

The team, which was formed based on the mandate of a Komnas HAM plenary meeting in February, would gather information from Novel and all related parties, including witnesses and authorities, as well as analyze documents and findings related to the case, said Komnas HAM commissioner Sandrayati Moniaga, who is also the head of the team.

Members of the team include Komnas HAM commissioner M. Choirul Anam, Catholic scholar Franz Magnis-Suseno, Komnas HAM chairman A. Taufan Damanik, Komnas HAM deputy for external matters Sandrayati Moniaga, activist Alissa Wahid and legal expert Bivitri Susanti.

“Many members of the public, [Novel’s] family and our colleagues have urged for the case to be solved […] We will seek to discover why the [investigation] process was stalled, however, we will not intervene into the police’s authority,” Sandrayati said on Friday.

Sandrayati said the team was scheduled to work for three months, after which it would issue recommendations, expected to help law enforcement authorities in their investigation into the case.

The team was established amid pressure on Jokowi to establish an independent fact-finding team similar to the one set up by former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to investigate the murder of prominent human rights defender Munir Said Thalib in 2004.

In April last year, two unknown assailants riding a motorcycle hurled acid into Novel’s face while he was walking home from morning prayers at a nearby mosque. At the time, Novel was leading the KPK investigation into the e-id graft case, which has implicated dozens of politicians.

After the attack, which was met by a chorus of condemnation, Novel received treatment in Singapore for the severe injuries sustained to his left eye. (swd)
