High schoolers to sit national exam in April

ocational high school students will sit the National Examination (UN) between April 2 and 4 while high school exams will be held from April 9 to 12, an Education and Culture Ministry official announced on Tuesday. Meanwhile, junior high schoolers will do their tests from April 23 to 26,
Bambang Suryadi, the head of the ministry’s National Education Standard Agency, announced that 78 percent of schools across the archipelago were ready for the computer-based national examination.
Seniors at schools that have not yet adopted the computer format, will take the paper-based exams.
“This is the fourth year that we have used computer-based tests. With computerization, we can narrow down the chances of cheating as well as reduce expenses,” he said.
Bambang said the ministry had allocated Rp 35 billion (US$2.5 million) to provide paper-based examinations nationwide this year. This figure is far less than the Rp 130 billion the ministry spent on copying papers and sending them across the country before the computer-based examination was introduced.
Bambang also said the ministry had coordinated with state-owned electricity firm PLN to make sure all schools in Indonesia, especially ones in rural areas, have adequate power supplies during the examination period.
“We have also prepared local servers in the exam rooms so that the exams can be conducted offline. Internet connection won’t be a problem,” he added. (gis)
