n investigation team of the Jakarta Military Command has alleged that its vessel sank on Monday as a result of maintenance negligence.
Jakarta Military Command spokesman Lt. Col. Kristomei Sianturi said the team was still gathering as much information as possible to prove such an allegation.
“Our team is currently investigating alleged procedural mistakes or poorly maintained engines,” he said recently as quoted by tempo.co on Wednesday.
The AD-16-05 boat’s engine failed during its trip to Pramuka Island in the Thousand Islands regency, while carrying military personnel for a social mission. The Jakarta Military Command then dispatched several other vessels to evacuate all crew members and passengers on the sinking boat. There were no casualties in Monday's incident.
The team, Kristomei added, was currently questioning several witnesses, including the vessel's crew members, to ascertain the chronology of the incident. He also said the team would check all data and reports regarding the vessel’s maintenance and the latest condition of its engine.
“We will probably raise the sunken boat for the investigation,” he said.
The sunken aluminum speedboat, which was manufactured by PT Tesco Indomaritime, was supposed to only carry 31 passengers and three crew members, but media have reported it was carrying 65 people at the time of the incident. (vla)
