T

he Jakarta Legislative Council plans to submit a petition to question the city administration if the latter rejects the recommendation to reopen Jl. Jatibaru Raya in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, which has been closed for almost three months to accommodate street vendors.

“We are waiting for the implementation of the Ombudsman's recommendations [to open the road]. If the city administration does nothing, we will file the interpellation petition,” said the chairman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction at the City Council, Gembong Warsono, on Tuesday.

He added that the Ombudsman's recommendations to evaluate the spatial plan of the Tanah Abang area and open the road is in line with the council's stance.

Gembong said last month that he had secured the backing of at least 15 councilors from four factions, namely the PDI-P, the NasDem Party, the National Awakening Party and the United Development Party, for making use of the interpellation right.

Article 330 of Law No. 17/2004 on the interpellation right of regional councils stipulates that the right can be invoked if at least 15 councilors from more than one faction back such a move.

Gembong said Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan is also expected to provide a proper place for the vendors who should be relocated when the administration is set to open Jl. Jatibaru Raya.

“Do not let the vendors become victims should the governor implement the recommendation,” he added.

Earlier, the Ombudsman stated that the city administration had committed an unlawful action by closing the road to accommodate street vendors. Therefore, it called on the administration to open the road and relocate the street vendors 60 days at the latest after the recommendation is issued.
