T

he city administration is planning to construct a sky bridge connecting Tanah Abang Station in Central Jakarta with all blocks of Tanah Abang's market, the largest textile center in Southeast Asia.

The president director of city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya said the sky bridge would form a circular route connecting the station to Blok G, F, A and B and back to the station again.

“We want the train passengers from Tanah Abang Station to use the sky bridge. They will no longer need to walk on [Jl. Jatibaru Raya],” Arief said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

Arief said the sky bridge was a transit-oriented development (TOD) facility for Tanah Abang, with the proposed main area to be located at the back of Blok F, near the Krukut River.

He said the construction of the sky bridge would be a multiyear project, adding that the city administration should cooperate with state-owned companies, such as train operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia, which is also interested in building a TOD facility in Tanah Abang.

Earlier, Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said the administration did not plan to open Jl. Jatibaru Raya any time soon because of the planned construction of the sky bridge.

“Street vendors need space while the sky bridge is being constructed. So, don’t expect [that the street will] be opened soon,” Sandiaga said.

The closure of the street to motorists has been controversial, with continued protests from angkot (public minivan) drivers who are affected by the policy. (ami)
