ouse of Representatives Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has welcomed a bill that limits cash transactions being prepared by the government, saying that the rule could also reduce vote-buying during elections.
Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) chairman Kiagus Ahmad Badaruddin said previously that the bill, which would limit cash transactions to Rp 100 million (US$7,260), was ready to be approved by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo before it was sent to the House for deliberation.
"If you want to be mayor, governor or House member, you have to approach political parties for support. The price [of support] can be billions of rupiah or more," he said during a workshop at the PPATK office in Jakarta.
"It has to be paid in cash – in rupiah or foreign currencies. No one dares to accept bank transfers."
Bambang promised to encourage lawmakers to approve the bill.
"If the government can finish the draft within the next one or two months, we will immediately instruct House Commission III, overseeing law, human rights and security affairs to establish a committee to deliberate the bill,” he added.
Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly said a team had completed a draft of the bill, which would be approved by President Jokowi soon. (bbn)
