A

t least seven people died on Monday after a building collapsed and hit a traditional music hall, where 11 people — mostly teenagers — were practicing karawitan music.

The old building was used as a swallow nest farm in Gegesik district, Cirebon regency, West Java.

Search and Rescue spokesperson in Bandung Joshua Banjarnahor said one person was also severely injured. “One suffered minor injuries and two others are safe,” he added. The accident happened at about 10 a.m.

The victims were mostly students at state junior high school Gegesik I who were practicing with gamelan sets. Music teacher Suherman, 48, who is also the music hall’s owner, was among the fatalities. The remaining six were aged between 13 and 14.

The students were practicing in preparation of a farewell event at their school.
