Indonesian sport climber Veddriq Leonardo secured a bronze medal in the men’s speed world record at the 2018 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup in Moscow on Sunday.

Veddriq defeated compatriot Muhammad Hinayah to win the bronze. Meanwhile, Reza Alipourshena of Iran won the gold, and Vladislav Deulin of Russia won the silver.

Indonesian Sport Climbing Federation (FPTI) chairman Faisol Riza said Veddriq had raised the bar for Indonesia on the international stage.

“I’m really proud to see that our climbers performed very well in the IFSC World Cup. They have joined the ranks of the world’s elite climbers. Winning a bronze medal means that we are able to face athletes from other countries,” Faisol said in a statement.

In the women’s competition, Aries Susanti Rahayu reached the semifinal round, where she lost to Luliia Kaplina of Russia.

“In the women’s speed category, our climber advanced to the semifinals. Indonesia was the only Asian country that reached the round, meaning that [Aries] managed to be among world’s bests, who were mostly from Europe,” Faisol said.
