resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has directed the Haj Fund Management Agency (BPKH) to improve the transparency of its haj fund management, which has been marred by corruption in the past.
Jokowi held a Cabinet meeting with relevant ministers and officials on Thursday, during which the President received a report from the BPKH regarding the management of the haj fund, which came under the BPKH’s authority earlier this year after previously being managed by the Religious Affairs Ministry.
“Of course we want the management [of haj funds] to be transparent and accountable, which is also important according to sharia principles,” Jokowi said.
The BPKH recently asked the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to help it develop an anticorruption system to manage the approximately Rp 100 trillion (US$7.2 billion) in the haj fund.
In 2016, former religious affairs minister Surydharma Ali was sentenced to six years behind bars for embezzling haj funds between 2010 and 2013, causing billions of rupiah in state losses.
