Jakarta Police commenced an operation to curb motorists’ use of smartphones and common traffic violations.
Jakarta Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. Purwadi said the operation, which had enlisted 2,853 personnel from the police, Jakarta Transportation Agency and the Indonesian Military (TNI), would run from April 26 to May 9.
“The operation is just like any other, motorists who violate traffic rules, especially those who use smartphones while driving,” Purwadi said on Thursday as reported by kompas.com.
Purwadi said the use of smartphones while driving had caused traffic accidents, which was why the traffic unit had started focusing on the issue.
He said the operation had also sought to curb other traffic violations such as driving against the traffic flow, motorcyclists with two or more passengers, underage driving and driving without a helmets.
“We realize that each year the number of traffic accidents increases and we seek to reduce that by 50 percent. We expect this operation to improve traffic safety and reduce deaths and injuries,” he said.
Purwadi said the operation would start simultaneously across Indonesia. “The operation is a part of preparations for Operation Ketupat, which is held annually during Idul Fitri,” he said. (ami)
