erman car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has unveiled to the Southeast Asian public on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur its first full-electricity car, Concept EQ.

The car, with EQ standing for “electric intelligence”, offers a comprehensive electric mobility ecosystem of products, services, technologies and innovations.

"EQ is derived from the brand values of emotion and intelligence. It encompasses all major aspects of customer-oriented electric mobility and goes beyond the vehicle itself," said Mercedes-Benz Malaysia CEO Claus Weidner.

Among its ready-installed features are a 3D real-time map display, floating wide-screen display, organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays and personalized user interface.

The cars are equipped with two electric motors on the front and rear axles and a battery in the vehicle floor. It can accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour under five seconds and has a range of up to 500 km.

“Just like your smartphone, the car is ready both for charging at home by induction or wallbox for fast charging, which to reach 100 percent it only needs one and a half hour,” Weidner said.

Concept EQ is part of the automaker’s efforts to lead in the automotive industry amid growing interest and needs for alternative-fuel cars, especially electric cars. Concept EQ was first showcased to the public two years ago at the Paris Motor Show, and has since traveled to more than dozen countries in Europe and also in the United States.

After Malaysia, the car will be introduced to Singapore in the coming weeks. (bbn)
