amirah, 38, and her six children have been separated from her husband and another child after an angkot (public minivan) driver suspected the family of being terrorists and drove them to a police station, an official has said.
The family of nine previously lived in a rented house in Kramat Pella, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, but were evicted for failing to pay several months’ rent.
The father is unemployed, according to East Jakarta Social Affairs Agency official Nimun.
The family then sought shelter at a mosque in Blok M, South Jakarta, but a mosque caretaker told them to contact the city’s social housing.
Instead, the family decided to visit a relative in Ciputat, South Tangerang, Banten province, but they were separated on the way to their destination.
Just after the father and one of the children had stepped out of the angkot, the driver stepped on the gas pedal and sped to a police station with Zamirah and her six children still inside the vehicle.
“The driver suspected they were terrorists and took them to a police station,” Nimun said in a statement issued by the Jakarta Social Affairs Agency.
After questioning Zamirah and her children, police investigators found no indications that they may be related to a terror plot and sent them to the East Jakarta Social Affairs Agency, where they were officially registered.
According to Zamirah, her husband Hanri Jeki holds a doctoral degree from a university in Saudi Arabia. But as of Wednesday afternoon, his whereabouts and that of the other child remain unknown, said the agency’s spokesperson, Miftahul Huda.
