mong municipalities, South Jakarta has collected the most zakat (alms) for five consecutive years, says Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno.
In 2017, South Jakarta aimed to collect Rp 32 billion (US$2.25 million) in zakat but collected Rp 42 billion instead, the highest among the four municipalities and the regency.
The municipality administration’s ability to encourage its residents to give alms is expected to inspire other municipalities and the regency.
“I wish all municipalities and the regency could compete to collect zakat in the first 10 days of Ramadhan,” he said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Wednesday.
South Jakarta Mayor Tri Kurniadi said his team had made an effort to achieve its target every year.
“We’re [actively] approaching muzaki (people who are obligated to give alms),” he said. (vla)
