oekarno Hatta Airport Police have arrested a ground crew member, identified only as RA, 32, in Palembang, South Sumatra, for alleged cargo theft.

Soekarno Hatta Airport Police chief Sr. Adj. Comr. Victor Togi Tambunan said the allegations came to light when an employee of J&T shipping company reported a theft from one of its shipments.

“At the time, a package containing 150 cellphones was sent to Palembang. When the package reached Palembang, it was found that 30 cellphones were missing,” Victor said on Friday, as reported by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

“After the initial investigation, we found that one of the ground crew in Palembang allegedly stole the cellphones,” he added.

Victor said after the police had gathered enough evidence, they immediately sent a team to arrest the suspect in Palembang.

“We arrested the suspect at his house in Palembang on May 11 and immediately brought him to the Soekarno Hatta Airport Police for questioning.”

Victor said RA allegedly confessed to the police that he took the cellphones soon after the package was unloaded from a plane’s cargo hold, adding that he had sold some of the cellphones.

“The suspect is charged with Article 362 of the Criminal Code (KUHP), which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison,” he added. (ami)
