group of criminals has allegedly broken into three pawnshops in three different areas in Depok and Bekasi, West Java by drilling through the walls.
The alleged driller, identified as Iwan, a low-paid porter in Tanah Abang market, Central Jakarta, said the group had rented a house near their targets before breaking into the shops so they could better monitor the situation. They claimed they were fruit sellers.
There are four other suspects, identified only by their initial R, D, AS and H.
They committed their crimes in the morning or at weekends, when there were no security officials on duty.
"My task was to drill the wall, and we barged into the shop to break down safety deposit boxes. We also took some valuable items such as mobile phones, laptops, cameras and money," Iwan said at the Jakarta Police Headquarters on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
To avoid arousing suspicion from the noise of the drill, they played music, Iwan said.
The group also damaged CCTV cameras.
They collected Rp 1.9 billion (US$134,124) in their operation, said Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono. (fac)
