motorcyclist who rode a modified motorbike similar to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's popular chopper was ticketed by a traffic police officer for not having rearview mirrors or license plate, Surabaya Police said on Sunday.
Andre Kurniawan, a resident of Surabaya, East Java, modified his motorcycle to look like the Chopperland owned by the President. He was going to register his bike at a Chopper Cup competition in neighboring Malang next week, he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
“I was ticketed because [the motorcycle] did not have rearview mirrors or license plate,” the 24-year-old Wonokusumo resident said.
He told the police that he was inspired to modify his motorcycle after he saw President Jokowi ride his Chopper during his visit in Sukabumi, West Java, on April 8. Unlike the President’s chopper, Andre rode a 1990 Honda Astrea 800 motorcycle.
“I spent Rp 10 million (US$708) to transform the old motorcycle into a chopper like the one Pak Jokowi has,” he said, noting that the modification was ongoing, hence the absence of rearview mirrors and license plate.
Surabaya Police traffic unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Eva Guna Pan Pandia said his team had been carrying out an operation on Saturday night on several roads across Surabaya when they found Andre. (vla)
