State-owned electricity company PLN on Tuesday connected 13 villages in Natuna Islands, Riau Islands province, to grid power.
The electrification of the villages is expected to help the local economy grow faster in the remote region, said PLN Sumatra region director Wiluya Kusdwiharto, as reported by kompas.com.
A ceremony for the occasion was held in Tanjung Batang village, Natuna regency.
The 13 villages are Pulau Tiga, Tanjung Kumbik Utara, Setumuk, Selading, Sabang Mawang Barat, Tanjung Batang, Kadur, Tanjung Pala, Meliah, Terayak, Meliah Selatan, Subi Besar and Subi Timur.
Under the Bright Natuna Program, PLN has also expanded electricity supplies to 24 hours a day in six locations in Natuna islands, namely the villages of Pulau Laut, Serasan, Midai, Subi, Klarik and Pulau Tiga.
The company used diesel-fueled power plants, said Wiluyo, adding that such power plants were the best option to electrify outermost and remote regions.
The Bright Natuna Ptrogram is part of the national Village Electrification Program. In Natuna, 69 of 76 villages have been electrified under the program. (bbn)
