T

he East Jakarta Police arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly throwing acid at two men during a Ramadhan event called “Sahur (predawn meal) on the Road” on Jl. Otista Raya in East Jakarta on Sunday morning.

“The suspect was part of a group that participated in the Sahur on the Road event. He also bought acid water in a mineral water bottle during the event,” Tony said on Monday as reported by kompas.com.

Tony said the suspect threw acid water at his victim just for fun. “However, we are still investigating whether there is someone else who commanded the suspect or planned the attack,” he said.

He said that local residents Daniel Ksatria and Muhammad Fiyu were victims of the attack. Daniel suffered burns to his face and Fiyu to his arm.

Tony added that the victims were members of the local public security and order unit (Kamtibmas) that tried to approach and scold the group traveling in the motorcade.

The suspect faces charges under Article 351 of the Criminal Code and a maximum of five years in prison.

In a separate incident, two South Jakarta residents were arrested on Sunday morning by the Central Jakarta Police for allegedly wielding sharp weapons while approaching police officers while the latter attempted to break up a brawl on Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat in Central Jakarta. The residents were participating in a sahur motorcade event. (ami)
