T

he Jakarta Police is set to commence on Wednesday an annual operation, named Operation Ketupat, to regulate traffic and ensure public order during the Idul Fitri holiday season.

“We’ll deploy some 5,200 officers that will also be backed up by military personnel,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said on Tuesday.

The police had prepared 143 security and service posts across the city, Argo added, which would be tasked with safeguarding and serving motorists throughout the holiday. The posts would be equipped with additional facilities from other parties, such as tow trucks, ambulances and vehicle service stations.

To avoid congestion, the police would monitor the traffic by using CCTV cameras from state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga.

“We’ll keep our eyes on the roads. Thus, say there’s a traffic jam at Cikarang [in West Java], we’ll know what to do and can immediately disentangle the congestion,” Argo said, as quoted by kompas.com.

The Jakarta Police predicts that the peak of outbound Idul Fitri traffic will start on June 8 and last for three days.

The force’s traffic unit will reportedly deploy 1,273 officers to monitor road conditions. They will be stationed at multiple spots inside the city and several spots on the outskirts.

“They’ll be deployed at the Cikampek toll road, the Jagorawi toll road and the Banten [Merak] toll road as well as several departure spots in the city, such as bus terminals, railway stations and airports,” said Jakarta Police traffic unit chief Sr. Comr. Yusuf. (vla)
