A

collision between a commuter line (KRL) train and a minivan at a rail crossing in Batu Ceper, Tangerang, killed three members of a family on Sunday.

The minivan reportedly broke through the lowered barrier as the train, which was serving the Duri-Tangerang route, was passing through the crossing, said PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia spokesperson Eva Chairunisa on Monday.

“What is certain is that the KRL was crossing and followed the standard operating procedure, so there was no violation of the law,” Eva said as quoted by kompas.com, adding that three of the six minivan passengers were killed in the accident. Three other passengers were injured.

She said the guard had signaled the driver to not drive through the crossing, as the barrier had already been lowered. As the KRL was not able to brake once it was crossing, it collided with the vehicle.

The minivan was heavily damaged, while the six passengers inside were taken to the hospital, where three of the passengers passed away. Following the incident, the KRL’s route was halted for 15 minutes.

“Our condolences [to the victims’ family],” said Eva. “We regret that this incident occurred and expect drivers will be more vigilant when crossing a train track. The KRL is not able to suddenly brake as it is predetermined by given signals.”

“It took 15 minutes to check the circuit. Once it was safely rerun and there was no confirmed damage to the train line, we put it back into operation.” Eva said. (act)
