ustralian authorities have deported a 65-year-old Indonesian national for allegedly carrying digital child pornography into Australia.
According to a statement from Australian Border Force (ABF), the material was found on the two mobile phones belonging to the suspect during a baggage check upon his arrival on June 15 at Melbourne Airport via Singapore. The suspect's identity has not been released at this time.
The ABF issued an infringement notice immediately upon discovering the restricted material, seizing the suspect’s electronic devices and cancelling his visitor visa. He was later detained and removed from the country a day later on June 16.
The border authority, which is part of the Australian Department of Home Affairs, stated that it took a zero-tolerance approach on the issue of child sexual exploitation, including child pornography.
“[The ABF] officers are alert to the threat of these sickening images coming into the country and won’t hesitate to detain and remove from Australia anyone found in possession of them,” Craig Palmer, the ABF Regional Commander for Victoria, said in the statement.
Australian law enforcement have been working with local and international partners, including Indonesia, in sharing information on suspected or convicted child sex offenders. The information exchange is intended to deny such individuals from entering and leaving Australia as well as other countries to protect potential victims. (evi)
