ire tore through a warehouse that had been converted into living quarters in the Mega Cipta Baru Merah industrial park in Batam, Riau Islands, at about 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, killing six and critically injuring another.
The victims were a family of five consisting of father Josuha Pakpahan, wife Pang Pang and their children William, Eby and Coco as well as housemaid Ance. Another housemaid, Anggit, is in a critical condition and has been admitted to Budi Kemuliaan Hosptial.
“We don't know yet what the cause is as we are waiting for the forensics team to come from Medan [in North Sumatra],” reported local police chief Adj. Comr. Ricky Firmansyah.
Firmansyah reported that the response time was slower than usual as many neighbors were on holiday.
A neighbor named Anan was the first person to notice the fire. He heard a strange noise coming from the direction of the building and upon inspection saw it was on fire and alerted other neighbors.
Firmansyah said provincial police chief Insp. Gen. Didid Widjanardi was at the crime scene conducting a preliminary inspection. (nor)
