Island focus: Bandung HIV/AIDS activist-musician dies

Deradjat Ginandjar, the vocalist of hardcore punk band Jeruji and a renowned HIV/AIDS activist, died on Thursday night. He was 37.

Deradjat, who was commonly known as Ginan, was known not only for his music but also for his activism in changing attitudes toward people with HIV/AIDS and campaigning for “Support. Don’t punish”, which advocates policies against the criminalization of drug users. Ginan had publicly declared himself as having HIV/AIDS.

Indra Simorangkir, a friend and colleague at Rumah Cemara, a community house for former drug users and people with HIV/AIDS, which Ginan founded in 2003, said he had watched a World Cup match with Ginan on Thursday night before driving him home. Indra later received news that Ginan had passed out not long after he got home. He died on the way to hospital. The cause of his death has yet to be established.

Ginan joined Jeruji in 2015 and, along with the other band members, was preparing a tour. Stay True, which was released in October 2016, was Jeruji’s last album with Ginan. Ginan promoted his activism through music and sports.

In 2011, Rumah Cemara became a local partner for the Homeless World Cup and sent a team to participate in the competition. Rumah Cemara recruited people with HIV/AIDS, former drug users and members of the urban poor, to compete in a local level competition before selecting the best ones and sending them to the Homeless World Cup.
