Economy in brief: Coworking businesses see high growth

Coworking Indonesia, an association of coworking businesses, has recorded high growth in the sector as seen in its growing membership.

Coworking Indonesia secretary-general Felencia Hutabarat said that in the last two years, the number of coworking offices had increased to around 200 from just 45.

“The figures have continued to grow since 2016. Presently, there are about 200 coworking spaces across the country,” Felencia said on Tuesday in Jakarta, adding that the business in offering shared workplaces was growing well, particularly in large cities like Jakarta.

Felencia said that the increase in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups had contributed significantly to business growth, as SMEs and startups relied on coworking spaces in managing their businesses. She said about 75 percent of all coworking offices were located in Jakarta.

While the number of coworking spaces continued to grow, she said the association still struggled to educate businesspeople about the functions and benefits of leasing coworking spaces to improve their businesses.
