he Teluk Naga Police in Tangerang, Banten, have shot the suspected leader of a gang of alleged muggers called Geng Amster.
The 24-year-old suspect, Purna, also known as Gele, was shot in his right leg during his arrest on Sunday.
Geng Amster is believed to be responsible for a string of armed robberies committed over the last two years, according to Teluk Naga Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Dedi Herdiana.
Arrested along with Purna were Piteng, 21, and Kontet, 20.
“We had to shoot [Purna] because he fought back when we approached him,” Dedi said as quoted by tempo.co on Tuesday, adding that the arrests were made in a rented house in Tanjung Pasir.
According to Purna, the name Geng Amster is derived from the capital city of the Netherlands.
“We [the gang members] all love soccer, we’re fans of the Netherlands’ national team,” Purna said.
This is Purna’s second arrest after he was released from police detention eight months ago, Dedi said.
The gang comprises nine members and the police are currently tracking down the remaining six, he added.
