he Jakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has officially called off the search for the crocodiles reportedly spotted in Grogol River, West Jakarta, because the agency officers are sure the crocodiles are no longer in the river and may have returned to the sea during low tide.
“[The search] has been stopped because the crocodiles are not there anymore, they have moved away,” BKSDA official Bambang Yudi said on Tuesday, kompas.com reported.
He said all the search equipment had been withdrawn from the site and BKSDA officers had also stopped their patrol in the area.
“[We will stop the search] unless there is a report from the residents. Our call center is on alert 24 hours a day,” he said.
The search began on June 27. Three crocodiles were reportedly spotted on the river, the biggest one was said to be 2.5 meters long.
Bambang said all efforts had been made to catch the crocodiles, including baiting them using chicken meat and putting nets around the river, but to no avail.
He said the officers almost caught one crocodile, but it ran away and returned to its hiding spot after onlookers threw stones at it. (ami)
