resident of Jelutung district in Jambi city, Jambi, caught one of three crocodiles seen swimming in the Asam River after fears that they might attack residents.
Mahaka Maryago caught the 1.5 meter crocodile on Tuesday morning when he was looking for worms to sell. He first thought it was a lizard, but realized it was a crocodile after taking a closer look.
He caught it by using a plastic rope and placed it in his neighbor’s water tank. Residents fed pork to the crocodile.
Mahaka said the crocodile was young, while the other two crocodiles measured 4 m.
“We first saw the three crocodiles in the river a week ago,” he said, adding that he caught it because residents feared using the river.
Another resident, Rusminah, said she was glad one crocodile had been caught because children bathed in the river.
“I am concerned that something bad will happen to the children in the river,” she said, adding that locals have urged the authorities to immediately catch the other two crocodiles.
