hina has underscored its domination in women’s water polo by defeating one of its toughest opponents, Japan, 12–8 in the 2018 Asian Games women’s water polo competition at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatics Center in Central Jakarta.
China controlled Friday’s game from the first round on, displaying aggressive attacks and powerful swimming that ultimately silenced Japan 3-0. Japan tried to catch up in the second and third rounds with one and three goals, respectively, but ultimately had to admit that the Chinese defense strategy was too powerful.
“China is stronger. In particular, they swim very well […]. Their goalkeeper is also very tall,” Japan’s head coach, Motomiya Makihiro, told reporters after the match.
Makihiro was referring to Chinese goalkeeper Peng Lin, who made it difficult for her team to attack, saving 12 of 20 shots that Japan launched at their goal.
In the final round, Japan tried to counterattack and did score two goals, but China scored three more to close the match 12-8.
China beat Kazakhstan 11-4 on Thursday and will face Indonesia on Sunday, while Japan will take on Thailand.
“We have to win. Thailand is not easy. We will prepare ourselves,” Makihiro said.
This is the first loss for Japan after trashing Indonesia 15-4 on Thursday.
In an earlier match, Kazakhstan’s team defeated Thailand 13–4. It was a big loss for Thailand after winning against Hong Kong, China, 19-6 on Thursday.
