T

he 2018 Asian Games will begin today, Saturday, August 18 with a grand opening ceremony to be staged at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.

The glamorous show that will begin the Games will show the rest of the world that ‘Indonesia is a big nation that is capable of hosting an international event,’ said the Asian Games official website yesterday.

The ceremony, which will be witnessed by billions of spectators around world, is going to feature renowned Indonesian singers such as Anggun, Raisa, Tulus, Edo Kondologit, Putri Ayu, Fatin, GAC, Kamasean and Via Vallen.

The spectacular stage of the event will be one of the largest of its kind.

The 18th Asian Games is to be held in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang and this will be the first time the Asian Games are co-hosted in two cities. The Indonesian capital of Jakarta hosted the Games earlier in 1962. Palembang is the capital of the South Sumatra Province.

Events will be held in and around the two cities, including venues in Bandung and Province of West Java and Banten.

Sri Lanka contingent -

A strong contingent of 177 athletes, and a total of 255 individuals, will be there representing Sri Lanka at the Games.

The event is to end on 2nd of September.

Sri Lanka is to take part in 30 sport disciplines. These include eSports, a form of competition using video games, which will only be a demonstration sport this year.

The opening-ceremony stage, with features of 120-meter length, 30-meter width and 26-meter height, will showcase a towering mountain as its background, accompanied by Indonesian beautiful, unique plants and flowers, the Game’s official website reported Friday.

The stage -

This stage, manually made by artists from Bandung and Jakarta, will also become the arena for a total of 4,000 dancers to perform, choreographed by top choreographers Denny Malik and Eko Supriyanto. Having trained for months, these dancers will perform an energetic and elegant show alongside an orchestra of hundred musicians with its two conductors Addie M.S. and Ronald Steven, whose reputation is already well-known in Indonesian music scene.

Participants -

All 45 members of the Olympic Council of Asia are scheduled to participate in the Games this time.

It has been agreed that traditional rivals North Korea and South Korea will compete as a unified team in some events under the title ‘Korea’ (COR) as they did at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Both nations are also expected to march together under a unified flag during the opening and closing ceremonies.
