ndonesia has shown it has a promising future in women’s artistic gymnastics despite finishing last among the top eight countries competing in the 2018 Asian Games team final on Wednesday at JIExpo Kemayoran in Central Jakarta.

Along with Malaysia, Indonesia was one of only two representatives from ASEAN in the final eight of Asia’s women’s artistic gymnastics team final after making it through the preliminary round yesterday.

Indonesian gymnastics team manager Dian Arifin said the result should be treated as an achievement, as it was rare for Indonesia to finish in the top eight in Asia for gymnastics.

“We could say that it was the first time in a long time that we have set foot in the top eight of a team final, so it was a good result for us,” the former gymnast said.

Dian added that the team had learned about mentality and technique from the winners, as Indonesia sets its sights on medals at next year’s SEA Games in the Philippines.

Dressed in blue and white leotards, Indonesia started the final with three gymnasts: Amalia Fauziah, Armartiani and Tazsa Devira. Meanwhile, the team’s one substitution was the team’s youngest, 15-year-old Nur Cahya.

Devira from Indonesia’s women’s team said she had learned a lot from the final and believed she could do better in the next competition.

China won gold in the final, followed by North Korea and Japan in second and third place, respectively.

Indonesia’s medal hopes will now be pinned on two women’s finals, namely the vault and floor exercise finals on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Indonesian gymnastics star and 2017 SEA Games gold medalist Rifda Irfanaluthfi will compete in the finals.
