ndonesian karateka Ahmad Zigi Zaresta Yuda won the bronze medal on Saturday from the men's kata individual event after defeating Adham Hashem, 28, of Qatar with a unanimous 5-0 decision.
The 20-year-old Zigi, 27th in the world's kata ranking, bested his opponent for the bronze medal held at the Jakarta Convention Center in the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
"This is my first Asian Games, and my personal target was actually to reach the final. But perhaps, this is the best for me and I remain grateful," said Zigi, who hails from Lingsar subdistrict in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
"I dedicate my medal to the people of Lombok who have continued to support me despite their hardship after the earthquake," he added.
The people of Lombok Island were hit hard by three powerful earthquakes earlier this month, which claimed the lives of at least 487 people, injured about 7,700 and displaced more than 410,000. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded the quakes as having destroyed at least 72,000 houses, 671 schools, 128 places of worship and 52 health facilities.
Zigi failed to advance to the final after all five judges gave the deciding points to eventual gold medalist and current world number one Ryo Kiyuna of Japan in the semifinals.
Zigi has met Ryo six times in total but has yet to defeat his nemesis.
Ryo outwitted Yita Wang from Taiwan 5-0 in the final.
In the women's kata individual, Kiyou Shimizu of Japan won the gold medal with a score of 5-0 against Soi Lam Sou of Macau. (yan)
