A

lecturer from Palopo Cokroaminoto University in South Sulawesi has been put on temporary leave after a video of him arguing with a student over a Rp 2,000 (13 US cents) levy went viral.

In the video that was uploaded by Facebook user Tandiesak Parinding, the lecturer from the School of Computer Engineering is seen arguing with a student in the class, telling him that he must follow the rules on campus.

The student in the video responds by saying: “I respect the rules on campus but I don’t think it states that students are required to give Rp 2,000 every time a lecturer comes into class.”

The lecturer gets angrier and tells the student to leave the class and learn straight from the rector.

Following the incident, university spokesman Hasbi said on Sunday that the lecturer had been put on leave while campus officials investigated.

“The [sanction] will be determined as soon as the disciplinary commission completes its investigation,” he said as quoted by Kompas.co.

University rector Hanafie Mahtika emphasized that the campus never requires students to give money for any class attended by a lecturer.

“We have never had such a rule on campus and I never heard of a lecturer asking for money until today,” he said. (ris/ahw)
