Maxi Koda’s hat trick guides Ceria Komodos into final

The Indonesian Cricket League (ICL) entered its knock-out phase with four teams battling for the two spots in the final over the weekend.

League leaders the Ceria Komodos were the first to book a spot in the final with an easy win over the Daehan Super Kings (DSK). The Yadavas Chairos Tigers kept their final hopes alive with a close win over the Jakarta Knightriders, and now face DSK next Sunday to decide the second finalist.

Ceria Komodos skipper William Noronha has placed his faith in young Indonesian talent throughout the tournament, and they repaid his faith in the knock-out game on Sunday.

After electing to bat first, the Komodos lost both their openers early to the guile of Karthigai Deepan. The young Rohan Shirodkar then played the anchor role to perfection as he stitched together partnerships first with Rajesh Santhanam and then with Danielson Hawoe to take the Komodos to a slightly below-par score of 138 in their 20 overs.

Maneesh Dubey bowled a fabulous opening spell and got rid of the dangerous Srinivasan Govindraj.

Dangerous Kirubasankar and Vimal Nair were starting to look ominous when Maxi Koda changed the complexion of the game in the space of three balls.

Koda trapped Kirubasankar in front with a speedy skidder and knocked over Santhosh Kumar off the next ball. He then returned to castle Fachri Nuryadi to claim a well-deserved hat trick.

Vimal Nair tried to bring DSK back into the chase but holed out to a good catch in the deep, and with it disappeared the chances of a win as his side eventually fell 33 runs short.

The second game of the day was a topsy-turvy, closely fought affair between the Jakarta Knight Riders and the Yadavas Chairos Tigers.

The Tigers chose to bat first and were in deep trouble as Vivek Nair and Desandri Candil Saputra ran amok with some fabulous fast bowling. Things looked bleak with half the side back in the shade of the pavilion with just 41 runs on the board. The skillful Padmakar Surve then launched a stylish counter-attack and with the support of some woeful catching, put on 93 in the last 10 overs to give the Tigers a total to defend.

Yadavas Chairos Tigers opening bowlers Gede Darma Arta and Rajeev Kumar were also superb as they dried up the scoring. Even the skillful Pallav Malhotra was made to play out a maiden by Rajeev and he fell in trying to force the pace. Mohib Hussaini and Vivek Nair brought things back for the Knightriders and at the half-way mark, they were ahead. The Tigers bowlers then struck back with quick wickets and at 82 for 7, the outlook was not bright for the Knightriders.

Yashpal Singh, however, had other ideas as he took a fancy to the harmless spin bowling of Frengky Shony who went for 29 runs in two overs. Yashpal was hitting them hard and with 27 runs needed off the last two overs against a sloppy Tigers fielding side, the game was on. Young Gede Darma Arta bowled a fabulous 19th over, conceding only 3 runs. Tigers batting hero Padmakar bowled the last over.
