Since its establishment in 1975, the ASEAN Women’s Circle of Jakarta (AWC) has been active in charity activities, focusing mainly on women, children and elderly people.
For example, the AWC recently donated seven sewing machines to Yayasan Al Hilmah, a foundation that focuses on elderly people and children, along with US$933 in cash and hygiene kits for rehabilitation projects undertaken by Caritas Manila to assist women and children affected by the war in Marawi, the Philippines.
The AWC also donated musical instruments to a school in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It also sponsored aftercare costs for cleft palate surgery for a young girl, Chaerunisa, through Yayasan Sinar Pelangi Jatibening in Indonesia.
In April, the AWC took part in the 2018 World Autism Awareness Bazaar in Jakarta. In cooperation with the Indian Mission to ASEAN, the AWC opened a booth at the bazaar, which offered creative hands-on craft activities like henna tattooing, diva (decorative earthen lamps) and découpage.
Another important recent activity was the helping of victims of natural disasters. The AWC donated funds and basic supplies through Saya Perempuan Anti-Korupsi to the people of Sukadana, Anyar and Karang Bajo villages in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. It also donated $2,000 to the victims of the Attapeu dam tragedy in Laos.
