he two largest ride-hailing application providers -- Go-Jek and Grab – have welcomed the government’s plan to establish its own ride-hailing application, with the aim of giving more choice to customers and nurturing fair competition.

“The government’s move will make it possible for people to choose the best transportation service. A level playing field and customer satisfaction should be prioritized,” said Grab Indonesia managing director Ridzki Jramadibrata as reported by kompas.com on Tuesday.

Previously, the Transportation Ministry announced its plan to establish a ride-hailing application managed by a state-owned enterprise.

The ministry's public transportation and multi-mode director Ahmad Yani said on Friday that the ministry will cooperate with state-owned telecommunication company PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia to create the platform.

“The platform will be like the one owned by the South Korean government,” Yani said.

Ridzki expressed his readiness to cooperate with the government to improve app-based transportation, assuring that the service would be safe, convenient and affordable.

“It is our objective to create more efficient transportation services,” he added.

Meanwhile, Go-Jek Indonesia's chief of corporate affairs Nila Marita made a similar comment, stressing that the development of ride-hailing app technology will benefit the public.

“We appreciate the initiative that will prioritize the interests of partners and consumers in the spirit of collaboration,” said Nila, adding that the government, however, should continue to strive for a good business and investment environment. (bbn)
