resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has expressed condolences to the Vietnamese people over the passing of their eighth president, Tran Dai Quang, who died Friday.
“I am saddened by this sad news because I just met him on Sept. 11, 2018. I was impressed by his dedication to his country and the people of Vietnam,” Jokowi wrote in the caption of a post on his official Instagram account @jokowi on Saturday.
Jokowi visited Vietnam last week and was welcomed by his Vietnamese counterpart Quang, who was a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The two presidents discussed economic cooperation and bilateral relationships.
“My prayers go out to [his] family, colleagues and the Vietnamese people. May he rest in peace,” Jokowi said.
Quang passed away on Friday at 10:05 a.m. local time at the age of 61.
According to the Board of Healthcare Services for Senior Officials, Quang died at Military Central Hospital 108 in Hanoi, Vietnam, due to serious illness, the state media said without elaborating.
Agence France-Presse reported that Quang’s last public appearance was on Wednesday in a meeting with visiting Chinese politicians and foreign dignitaries in Hanoi.
Quang had served as president since April 2016, after having previously served as minister of public security. (sau)
